Men’s Mental Health Month: Checking In Matters

June is Men’s Mental Health Month, a reminder that many men carry stress, anxiety, grief, and loneliness without ever talking about it. Too often, men are taught that strength means handling everything on their own. In reality, strength can also mean asking for help.

At the Institute for Civility, we see firsthand how meaningful conversations can build understanding and connection. Whether through our Student Legislative Seminar, workplace trainings, or community discussions, one lesson remains consistent: people thrive when they feel heard.

That simple act can make a tremendous difference.

Consider the veteran struggling to adjust to civilian life, the father balancing work and family responsibilities, or the friend who always seems to have it together. Many men are facing challenges that aren’t visible on the surface.

Creating a more civil society starts with creating spaces where people feel safe enough to be honest about what they’re experiencing. A simple check-in, a coffee conversation, or an offer to listen can help break down the stigma surrounding mental health.

This month, challenge yourself to reach out to the men in your life. Start a conversation. Listen with empathy. Let them know they don’t have to carry everything alone.

Learn more about the Institute’s work to foster respectful dialogue and stronger communities and consider supporting programs that help people connect across differences.

Because sometimes, the most important conversation is the one that starts with, “How are you, really?”
