About the Institute

The Institute for Civility in Government is a non-profit organization that works to reduce polarization in society. Through educational programs and membership, the Institute aims to build civility in a society that increasingly tilts towards uncivil speech and actions.

Activities Overview

The Institute is set up as a two-track system, and both are essential if civility is to become the greater norm in our society:

  • The first track is our membership. It is through our growing membership that our voices are heard in our homes, communities, and nation; that we encourage civility among our elected officials; that civility becomes a more visible part of the community dynamic; and that we encourage one another.
  • The second track is education. The Institute has developed a number of unique programs designed to help us all better understand the importance of civility of how to achieve it, and continues to explore opportunities for further development.
    • Congressional Student Forums
      • Congressional Students Forums allow students to engage with members of Congress in an intimate setting where they can ask any question, on any topic they want - so long as they do so with civility. This personal experience of civility in the governing process allows students to dialogue with some of the nation's top policy makers.
    • Civility Training
      • Our civility training uses four highly interactive 90 minute sessions to teach the importance of belief systems, listening and communication skills, teamwork, and resources for building civility.
    • Student Trips
      • We take groups of high school students to Washington, D.C. to experience government first hand. Not only do they explore the city, they also receive briefings on current issues and meet with members of Congress to share their concerns with civility and respect.
