About the Institute

The Institute for Civility in Government is a non-profit organization that works to reduce polarization in society. Through educational programs and membership, the Institute aims to build civility in a society that increasingly tilts towards uncivil speech and actions.

Make a difference in our nation. The Institute is an absolutely unique citizens’ movement for civility, serving as a catalyst for change. Each of our members is a constituent, and elected officials pay attention to what constituents think.  Simply joining the Institute is an important part of making the call for civility loud and clear.  Through membership in the Institute, average citizens have jumpstarted the civility conversation on Capitol Hill, and are now helping that conversation grow into action.  As elected officials build civil relationships across the political aisle, tensions decrease and opportunities for creative problem solving and teamwork improves.

Make a difference in our communities. As membership grows, the Institute hosts Congressional Student Forums and other education events on college campuses and beyond.  Many of these programs are designed specifically to teach young people how to maintain respect and dialogue with others, even in the midst of disagreement.  These are formative experiences for our youth, and will have an impact within their lives and our communities for years to come.

Make a difference for yourself. Beyond the satisfaction of knowing you are making a real difference in the lives of others far beyond the reach of your personal interactions, the Institute provides members with encouragement and resources to help maintain civility in their own lives.  All members receive the Institute’s quarterly newsletter, complete with book reviews, and are eligible to receive our email quote of the month if they so desire. Members of the Institute are also invited to all of our Congressional Student Forums and other events.

Our members come from across the nation. They are students, clergy, homemakers, retired folk and business leaders. Their careers are as diverse as real estate, computer programming, accounting, teaching, engineering, insurance, retail, social work, and air traffic control.  Every member counts!  Join now, and make a difference!
